Give More, Get More | 2013 Purpose & Goals

That’s right, 2013 — I’m bringing it. Big, hairy, audacious goals. It’s on.

Every year as December approaches and thoughts of the new year come to mind I am met with a buzz of excitement — something exciting is happening. I’ve felt that way for the past six or seven years. I had something – maybe the gentle tune of a bird, singing in my heart – telling me that the approaching year was special. This year? No. It’s not there.

Why it’s not there? I’ve rambled off a million reasons in my head. The first illogical reason is plain dumb but the number 13 kind of freaks me out. Has it before? Not really. Do I avoid ladders? Sometimes. Do flocks of crows give me goosebumps? From time to time. There’s just something about 2013, perhaps the numerology in it all, that is making me…. nervous.

Maybe it’s the big, list of goals I am setting for myself this year that’s giving me the nerves. Silly, silly.

So, you ask, what am I going to do about it? What can I do about it? Change my mind. Simple. 2013 is going to be amazing. 2013 is going to be amazing. 2013 is going to be amazing. 2013 is GOING to BE amazing! So there.

Lets start off with my goals:

  1. Finish my program at BCIT and graduate with “Distinction” honours by April.
  2. Volunteer as a career counselor
  3. Complete a triathlon.
  4. Enroll at TRU & complete two courses towards my degree.
  5. Elevate my workplace knowledge through external readings, courses, and events.
  6. Earn a public speaking engagement.
  7. Improve my golf game.

Truth: once I wrote it all down. Let it marinate for a minute. It’s not thatbig, hairy, and or audacious. It’s not that nerve racking. In fact, it doesn’t feel all that bad. 2013 is going to be an amazing year! What was all the fuss about?

Bringing these goals to a holistic level, I’ll hone in on purpose and as such I’ve whipped up a 2013 Purpose to guide me through the year:

Want Less. Celebrate More.

Surround yourself with people you admire. Free yourself of comparisons.

Give more back. Take more in.

The core message to myself is this: give more of myself to allow more in. My educational and triathlon goals are beasts in their own right but guess what – no one ever drowned in sweat. No one ever died of too much homework (knock on wood) so what have I got to lose?

If I want a fuller, richer experience I have to give more of myself to get it. The more we give, the more we get.

This year I pledge to give more, get more, and have a rocking good time doing it.

Follow my crazy journey. It’s going to be an amazing year.
